This exhibition showcases printmakers from Saltgrass Printmakers. Established in 2003, Saltgrass Printmakers is a local non-profit print studio providing open access to professional printmaking equipment and facilities.

Visceral Strands

Visceral Strands is a series of 35 etchings that explores my changing relationship with my body following illness, when I recognised it for the first time as something 'other' than myself that could exist and behave in ways that I had no control over. The prints show strips of meat, which I chose as imagery because they occupy a space somewhere between flesh and matter; both 'of' and 'other than' the living body. I configured real strips of butcher's meat into a different pattern for each image and then drew it, using white ground, onto a copper plate, which was then etched and printed. This constant reconfiguration of the meat strips evokes my repeated and unsuccessful attempts to assert myself over my body and instill coherence into my chaotic and rebellious flesh. In some images the strips co-operate, forming regular lines, but in most they resist, forming vortexes, tangles and dense knots whose interiors remain impenetrable and strange.

Train Tracts 2019.

Train Tracts is a series of twelve traveling chapbooks—tracts—which were unleashed in Amtrak stations in February 2019. Each tract is a collaboration between a writer and a printmaker—stories of movement and connection bound into sensual printed volumes. The tracts were carried about the nation by their train-riding readers, who were asked to contribute. Once the tracts completed their trips, they were mailed back to a central location to join their fellow scribbled-on, road-weary traveling tracts. In March 2019, the tracts that came back will be part of an exhibition at the Rio Gallery that is part of the 150th anniversary of The Transcontinental Railroad.
Twelve writers from around the country were given the prompt:
"Write 1000 word piece of creative nonfiction that is about making a connection with a stranger. Especially if it’s someone who had a very different perspective or life experience. Extra credit if it involves a train, or a trip across country."
For the project, Tullius, a Santa Fe, New Mexico-based gallery director and writer, teamed up with Stefanie Dykes, an artist and the co-founder of Saltgrass Printmakers, a non-profit printmaking studio located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Dykes put out a call inviting printmakers around the United States to participate. The artists took the text and designed a small edition of twelve books, each incorporating some traditional printmaking or bookmaking techniques. Some of the books include colored pencils so that readers can make notes and doodle as they read, some fold out into poster-sized art prints, some look like traditional books crafted of velvety soft handmade paper, one includes a sewing kit for readers to finish stitching the book themselves. Often the text is letterpress-printed, and the books stitched by hand. Each is a unique work of art.
