Transfer Credit

General Transfer Information

The Department or Art & Art History degrees are structured to treat the material in greater depth as one progresses from first-year through fourth-year courses.

If you have taken courses at a previous (regionally accredited) institution, you can ask the Department of Art & Art History to evaluate those courses to fulfill major requirements. The CFA Academic Advisors are available to meet with you to discuss the process of the Department of Art & Art History evaluating your previous courses. Make an appointment with a CFA Academic Advisor at createsuccess.utah.edu.

The following information explains the degrees offered by the Department of Art & Art History.

BA in Art History

Students begin with ARTH 2500: Introduction to Art History, and then go on to a range of upper-division coursework in the specialization of their choice. Potential art history majors will often get credit only for the Introduction class and will be expected to complete the rest of the major here.

Non-articulated courses can be reviewed for curriculum exception by completing the Curriculum Exception form and submitting to info@art.utah.edu and cc: advisor@finearts.utah.edu.

BFA in Studio Art

The course of study in studio art is designed as professional education for those who wish to become practicing artists and/or educators.  It also prepares students for advanced training at the graduate level.  Students working towards a BFA in Art or a BFA in Art Teaching will elect to enter one of the emphasis areas for specialization during their second semester:

Ceramics, Illustration, Painting & Drawing, Photography & Digial Imaging, Printmaking, Sculpture Intermedia

If you have taken non-articulated courses that you think may be equivalent to any of the First Year Foundations courses or others in your emphasis, please submit the appropriate documentation outlined here.

BFA in Art Teaching

BFA in Art Teaching students must take the First Year Foundations Program which consists of 21 credit hours (including ARTH 2500: Introduction to Art History). This degree combines coursework from the Department of Art and Art History and the College of Education. For more information, please see the Art Teaching page.

If you have taken non-articulated courses that you think may be equivalent to any of the First Year Foundations courses or others in the program, please submit the appropriate documentation outlined here.

BFA in Graphic Design

All Graphic Design BFA students must take the First Year Foundations Program within their first three semesters. To advance to the second-year level of the program, First-year Graphic Design majors must meet minimum grades and apply by portfolio. Second-year Graphic Design majors must pass Second-year Review to advance to the Third-year level of the program. Please see the Graphic Design BFA program page for more information about degree requirements and specifics on advancement policies.

If you have taken non-articulated courses that you think may be equivalent to any of the First Year Foundations courses or others in the program, please submit the appropriate documentation outlined here.

Transfer Credit - Articulated

The Department of Art & Art History has articulation agreements with the following Utah institutions. If you have received credit in any of the courses listed below, you will automatically receive transfer credit for the corresponding University of Utah course. In order for your transfer courses to satisfy your Art & Art History major requirements, you must receive C- or better (unless otherwise noted).

If you are seeking transfer credit for courses not listed here, or from another institution, see Transfer Credit - Non-Articulated.

Transfer Credit - Non-Articulated

The Department of Art & Art History makes every effort to accept as many transfer credits as possible, the content of courses varies greatly from school to school, and degree programs are organized differently. In our department, your petition for transfer credit is evaluated on an individual basis.

Transfer students may request to receive credit for courses taken at other institutions that count toward their Department of Art & Art History BFA or BA degree requirements. For studio courses, a portfolio must be submitted. Requests for transfer credit are reviewed on a rolling basis. (See Timeline info below).

Please see Transfer Credit - Articulated for information about course articulations with other Utah institutions.
