Human Perception & The Hidden Color Knowledge of Artists – Talk by Prof. Edward Bateman
March 4 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm MST
Are you fascinated by color? Is there something beyond “intuition” that explains how artist have made their color choices? Drawing on over three years of research, Prof. Edward Bateman will share his discoveries about color and art in a special presentation.
The lecture is Tuesday, March 4th, at 4:00 PM in ART 158.
I have developed a methodology for extracting usable color data spanning over 400 years of art and have found a consistent pattern emerge that helps to explain the choices of artists. My research began with the Impressionists and Post- Impressionists who were the most experimental users of color up to that time. Later I expanded my research to other eras and have found this pattern is not simply historical but also appears to be cross-cultural. Our human perception of color appears to be pre-verbal, so my data is presented in a visual form that makes understanding highly accessible and easy to grasp. I believe this research will be paradigm changing.
