Please join us to learn from visiting artist Kristian Bjørnard on Friday, January 10th, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM in ART 158, as he delivers his talk, “Copyright, Commons, and Creativity: How Intellectual Property Shapes Artistic Expression.”
Join Professor Kristian Bjørnard for a lecture examining how intellectual property shapes creative expression. Explore copyright and licensing through a brief history of how these frameworks affect creative works. Trace the shift from traditional copyright to open-source approaches, including Creative Commons, public domain works, and F/LOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software). See how liberated cultural works enable new artistic possibilities. The presentation will examine how grassroots practices, digital tools, and open licensing foster a more accessible creative landscape. Learn to identify when works are available for use and how to protect your own creative output.
Note: Please take this lecture with a grain of salt — this is social history and learned insight, not legal advice. Kristian Bjørnard is a designer and professor, not a lawyer.
Professor Bjørnard will conduct a workshop on Saturday, January 11th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in ART 273. Please email s.crook@utah.edu for a reservation. Only 30 spots are available, so register early.
The lecture and workshop are generously funded by Fine Arts Fees and the College of Fine Arts.
