Presentation & Workshop with Kate Ithurralde

February 5 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm MST

"From Concept to Community: Creating Public Art Proposals"

Please join us on Wednesday, February 5th, from 3:30 - 5:00 PM in ART 15 to hear from Kate Ithurralde, Salt Lake County’s Art in Public Places Manager. She served as the guest juror for the University of Utah's juried student exhibition and will lead a session on public art proposal development.

In "From Concept to Community," students will explore trends in public art and learn the essentials of proposal creation, with a focus on community engagement. Kate will cover practical elements such as budget development, insurance, and fabrication requirements. Following the session, students will have the option to create their own public art proposals, emphasizing how to connect with community values and audiences. Kate will then offer 1:1 critique sessions to provide personalized feedback on each proposal, helping students refine their ideas and approaches. This hands-on experience will equip attending students with the tools to develop public art proposals that are both feasible and impactful.

During the session, Kate will first review trends in public art and highlight notable public artists, studios, and emerging themes—such as memorials for gun violence victims. Followed by a 45-minute segment on proposal creation and community engagement, with time for questions.
