Visiting Artist Talk: Jessica Oreck from Office of Collecting
September 30, 2025 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm MDT
Please join us in hearing from artist Jessica Oreck on Tuesday, September 30th, at 5:00 PM in the ART Building, Room 158.
Multi-disciplinary artist Jessica Oreck collects the invisible — not the magical, sci-fi kind, but the everyday details so familiar they’ve slipped beneath our awareness. Working across film, animation, collage, photography, miniatures, and large-scale installation, her work invites a deep wonder for the overlooked. In 2021, she opened the Office of Collecting and Design in Las Vegas, a museum devoted to the minuscule, the forgotten, and the discarded. Described as “a mix of your grandparent’s attic and Hogwarts Castle,” it became a 42-foot traveling museum in 2024, bringing its drawers, curiosities, and atmosphere to cities across the U.S. The museum also doubles as an animation studio and prop house for Oreck’s film work. Two of her short animated series were commissioned by TED, and her films have screened at Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, and in theaters worldwide. The Criterion Collection recently hosted a retrospective of her feature documentaries.
The lecture is made possible through the generous support of the Carmen Morton Christensen Endowment, the Department of Art & Art History, and the College of Fine Arts.
