   Printmaking Emphasis

The Printmaking Program includes courses in Intaglio, Screenprint, Lithography, Relief and Mixed Media Printing. Photo processes, and Digital Imaging are also explored.

Beginning students are expected to develop a thorough working knowledge of the technical processes associated with these mediums, which includes printing a small edition, before using more experimental techniques. Although projects are used to assist students in acquiring the necessary skills, emphasis is placed on the originality of ideas and their subsequent development.

Advanced students are encouraged to develop a more individual and focused body of work, possibly utilizing a variety of print procedures or in combination with other media, such as photography, painting or sculpture.

Students are also encouraged to take classes in the growing Book Arts program run by the Marriott Library. Equipment includes Vandercook Cylinder presses, a Columbian press, a large paper cutter and a collection of wooden and metal type. The library also has extensive collections of Artists' books.

Each year students and faculty are invited to take part in a Miniprint Exchange Portfolio that normally includes 30 participants. Each artist receives a set of prints with the remainder donated to raise funds for student travel to the Southern Graphics Council Annual Conference and the Mid America Print Coucil Conferencce. The department also organizes other projects, exhibitions and print exchanges.
