Studio Art: Overview

We have an excellent undergraduate studio program. The curriculum motivates students to develop a range of technical, formal and conceptual strengths. We structure curriculum as a balance: beginning with a solid understanding and technical ability of visual elements and physical properties (form, process, and technique) and moving towards understanding contemporary art philosophies, an engagement with new genre, and exploring ways that art is active in culture today.

All first-year students must complete the first-year studio sequence before declaring an art major with an emphasis area. Some transfer students may have part of the first-year studio sequence waived, based on a portfolio review.

At the start of your second year, you will begin to specialize in a chosen emphasis area. All areas require interrelated coursework from some of the seven emphases.
