Sculpture Intermedia Emphasis

The central focus of the Sculpture Intermedia emphasis is your personal growth as an artist. Through curriculum, campus resources, studio investigations, aesthetic discussions, and training in technique and process, we provide an environment that supports this growth. Sculpture today is inclusive and often multidisciplinary. Our program reflects this. As a student you work with traditional approaches to object making: foundry, wood, and diverse metal fabrication. Equally important are the intermedia course offerings through which you gain experience in a wide range of approaches; many students choose to use computer applications, digital video, printmaking, book arts, papermaking and photographic processes as components of their three- dimensional artwork. Students are encouraged to make use of the extensive collections at the Dumke Fine Arts Reference room and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, both located on campus. Courses in our program range from Kinetics, Small Metals, Metal Fabrication, and Wood Shop Techniques to Environment/Installation, Intermedia Digital Imaging and Video, and Sculpture/Special Topics. Students interested in joining the two emphasis areas of Sculpture/Intermedia and Ceramics should look at our Cross 3D Focus: Ceramics and Sculpture/Intermedia.

An important strength of our program is the mentoring component and scope of opportunities we provide for you. Graduating from the Sculpture/Intermedia emphasis you leave with an understanding and ability to discuss contemporary art issues, a range of technical experience in traditional technique and new media formats, a slide portfolio of your work, a well-constructed artist's statement, a resume, and a plan for your future as an artist. Graduates from our program have continued their education in prominent master of fine art programs including Rhode Island School of Design, The School of the Chicago Art Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, and California School of Fine Arts. Professionally, our graduates have gone on to work in the film industry, in the areas of set design, special effects and model building. Graduates from our program have chosen to compete in the realm of public art, receiving commissions for, and producing large-scale public art pieces. Some of our graduates have entered the professional art world as assistants to international artists including Ann Hamilton, Margo Sawyer, and Paul McCarthy. Others have developed a career in the field of arts administration in museums and art centers.
