   Ceramics Emphasis

We offer both a major and a minor in the Ceramics emphasis. The Ceramics emphasis bases its program in the conviction that clay is a viable medium for contemporary expression. Along with an early emphasis in fundamental skills and a traditional understanding of ceramics materials, we encourage students to begin creating a visual vocabulary that best reflects them as an artist. Classes are organized to provide a diverse experience while opening the world of contemporary ceramics. Classes include: low-fire and high-fire systems, handbuilding and wheelthrowing, glaze calculation, mold making, and studio practices. The curriculum also includes History of Ceramics and an interdisciplinary degree with sculpture. As the oldest ceramics program in the inter-mountain West, we provide a strong connection with history while aggressively working in comtemporary contexts. Our goal is to develop well-rounded studio artists with uniquely personal vision.
