Art Teaching Emphasis
Art Teaching, the art education emphasis in the Department of Art and Art History, prepares teachers of art education who graduate with the theoretical knowledge, pedagogical practices and studio skills necessary to teach a comprehensive art curriculum. The B.F.A. in Art Teaching prepares you for certification to teach art on the secondary school level. Elementary Education majors also receive art teaching methods courses in the Department of Art and Art History. Course work in the program includes art production, the study and integration of art history, the theory and practice of art education, and critical bases for viewing art. Students gain experience as educators both in school and community settings. Opportunities to create public artworks and to help facilitate participatory art making experiences for the public are woven into the courses. Admittance into the Art Teaching emphasis occurs at the end of your first year when you declare your emphasis. For transfer students, admittance is contingent upon review of your portfolio and transcripts.
Within the art teaching emphasis, you may choose to certify in one of the following disciplines: painting/drawing, sculpture/intermedia, ceramics, or photography. Certifying in a particular area allows you to take a concentration of studio courses in your field of interest. We have found that this promotes better artists within the art teaching area. Our curriculum emphasizes a strong studio background prior to beginning education studies.
The Art and Art History Department also has a student chapter of the National Art Education Association. Student chapter members hold monthly meetings to help build support for art teaching. They also participate in community art projects as well as sponsor guest artist speakers. Members also learn to write funding proposals.
