GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATION
TO THE ART TEACHING EMPHASIS AREA
Admittance into the emphasis of Art Teaching is contingent upon committee review and acceptance. Students completing the full Foundation Program (link) may apply during the Spring Semester for acceptance into the Art Teaching emphasis for the following academic year. The review process usually takes place in mid-April. Check the Events Calendar (link) for this year's dates.
APPLICATION
- Complete the Art Teaching Portfolio Review Form (link)
- Label your portfolio and each of your pieces with your name
- Ask two members of the faculty to complete the Art Teaching Recommendation Form.(link) The instructor recommending must return it to the office by the portfolio due date
- Include a letter of intent in your portfolio
- Deliver the completed form, your portfolio, and letter of intent to the Department office, Art Building room 161, on the date and time identified for this year
- Incoming transfer students will need to include transcripts or a summary of transfer credit and two letters of recommendation
PORTFOLIO CONTENTS
- A good portfolio should include no more than 8-12 pieces
- Pieces should be selected from Foundation Program or Studio Art Program course assignments
- Several pieces that demonstrate your technical drawing skills must be included
- 3-D works must be in the form of well-taken slides or photographs
- Include pieces that demonstrate your abilities in the media area in which you intend to certify. The committee that reviews these pieces will be looking at your formal, compositional abilities and your craftsmanship skills. This includes your ability to execute these projects, the care you take in putting the piece together, and how well you have mastered the techniques required for each assignment. Presentation is also an important aspect that is considered.
LETTER OF INTENT
Address the following questions in a thoughtful manner in your letter of intent:
- What strengthens do I have that will positively effect and contribute to the lives of young people?
- What strengths do I have in the field of visual art production, research, or art history?
- Why do I think art education is important to young people's education?
- What is my current understanding or philosophy of art education?
