Art History: Overview

The discipline of Art History uses the visual heritage of peoples to understand the artistic, cultural, material, and expressive achievements of humanity. Art historians analyze and evaluate works of art and architecture in an effort to situate them within an historical framework. Art History is, by its very nature, an interdisciplinary field that considers political, economic, legal, social, religious, and/or scientific factors in the production of art. Thus, much art historical discourse is informed by compelling arguments about the context of art.

The curriculum of the Art History Program is designed to train students to develop historically informed approaches to art within a wider view of an interdisciplinary humanities education. It enables students to learn about Art History both as an academic discipline and as a profession.

With an advanced degree, students are well suited to careers in both the public and private sectors. Our students find positions dealing with the preservation of or education about art in museums, art galleries, libraries, educational facilities, historical societies, and government agencies. In other cases, art historians work with businesses, sometimes as expert consultants, to create a milieu for art or the interpretation of art. A BA degree in Art History can be a valuable asset for any occupation emphasizing cultural/historical awareness and communication skills.
