Course Content and Objectives
Students in 3020 will focus on the further development of the skills
that they learned in Art 1020, with an emphasis on the exploration of various
drawing media and an increased conceptual awareness as they develop a series of
drawings over the semester.
The subject matter for drawings in the advanced class will be self-directed,
allowing for the development of creative and critical skills.
Students will leave this course with an advanced understanding of drawing principles and techniques, improved observational skills, and an increased conceptual ability.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Students will leave this course with an advanced understanding of drawing principles and techniques, improved observational skills, and an increased conceptual ability.
The basic structure for the course will be as follows:
1. Introduction to topic i.e. blind contours, light and shadow, line quality, etc.
2. In-class exercises on topic.
3. Assignment: You will have a week or two to finish most assignments.
4. Critique: A group discussion on each others work will be held on the date the assignment is due, active participation is highly encouraged.
As with anything else, the only way to improve your drawing ability is practice. A sketchbook will be required to be kept by all students. The sketchbook is the greatest tool available for developing your technical ability as well as being a place to incubate your conceptual ideas for your final project. You are required to fill a minimum of one page per week in your book; you can draw anything you wish as long as it is from observation. I will collect your books at the beginning of class each Tuesday and return them to you by the end of the evening.
Attendance Policy
Excessive absences and tardiness will affect you grade.
Evaluation Methods and Grading Scale
I will not be grading based on your inherent drawing ability, but on the commitment you give to the course. Your work will be graded on the effort you put into meeting the objectives of each assignment. Your cumulative grade will be determined by your completion of assignments, participation, sketchbook, final project and portfolio. I expect that assignments will be turned in on the date they are due. Late work will be subject to a lower grade. I will make accommodations for emergencies but you must notify me immediately. This is a hands on class where attendance is necessary in order to learn anything and I expect you to show up to each class, on time, and to participate in critiques and in-class exercises. Excessive absences and tardiness will affect you grade.
Point Scale
In Class exercises -250 points
Assignments-400 points
Sketchbook-50 points
