Course Fee

$55.00

Course Text and Other Readings

The Structure of the class is simple, students will be given assignments based on the technical demonstrations.

Students will then be given time to complete the assignment and are expected to hang their work up at the beginning of class, on the due date. Critiques are the terminal part of each assignment. Students should create original work and be prepared to exchange ideas about their work and other student work. All discussion should remain objective, respectful and constructive.

Course Content and Objectives

This class will introduce you to a wide variety of printmaking techniques. The emphasis of this course will be on learning these techniques and developing innovative ways to incorporate them into non-editioned, images on paper. Handouts will be available for each demonstration but you are encouraged to take notes. Throughout the semester you will be encouraged to experiment and use the techniques to create work that interests you.

Course Objectives:

- To develop and extend personal ideas and language within you prints.
- To discuss and analyze you ideas, and the ideas of others, more confidently, in individual and group critiques
- To understand and fully exploit mixed/Print techniques and materials so that your ideas can be fully
realized
- To place Printmaking in a historical context and understand its link to other disciplines
- To develop a professional attitude to the Printshop, and others, by using all printing equipment competently and safely.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Attendance Policy

Your attendance is mandatory. The third abscense without a written excuse will result in the drop of your final grade by one letter. The forth by another letter, etc. There is no limit to excused abscences but if they are excessive
you may need to drop the class.

Arriving late to class, expecially for critiques or demos will result in half an abscence. Both critiques and demos require your participation.
All projects must be completed to receive a grade. If work is still missing at the end of the semester a failing grade will be submitted.

Evaluation Methods and Grading Scale

Grading:
Grades for studio projects will be based on the following criteria.
20% Development and interpretation of original ideas:
20% Demonstrated knowledge of techniques.
20% Participation in critiques and explanation of ideas
20% Presentation and cleanliness of work
20% Professionalism within the printshop
The time and effort you put into your work will be reflected in the above.
Final Grade:

You will receive a grade for each of the five assignments and your final will be determined by the average. Late assignments will be dropped a full grade. The last assignment will count for double of any previous assignment.

A = (excellent) above average in both technical and conceptual ability
B = (above average) complete the assignment with technical basics and basic conceptual inquiry.
C = (average) poorly executed and/ or badly conceived and not researched.

Each grade is given with the understanding that the class is new to students. As students progress through the semester, a greater degree of accomplishment is expected.

Classroom Safety and Etiquette:

(Safety) Because we are having a “shared studio experience” it is very important that we maintain a clean, safe and courteous working environment. Safety and cleaning procedures will be explained during demonstrations, students are responsible for taking notes and following all procedures. (Cleanliness) The cleanliness of the Printshop will determine the clealiness of your work and time it takes to create it. Clean up all ink, glass slabs, ink rollers, newsprint etc. after printing. In addition to maintaining cleanliness throughout the semester, students
will be required to participate in a Mid-term and Final clean up. (Glass slabs) There are a limited number of glass slabs in the studio. Be courteous, and when needed make arrangements to share space and press time. Keep the glass slabs clean, do not cut on them with razors and be careful handling heavy rollers (so not to drop handle ends and crack glass). (Rollers and Brayers) Do not let ink dry on rollers, between inking-store in roller cradle (it will roll off glass slabs) clean thoroughly with mineral spirits only.
