Course Description
Instruction in the fundamentals of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design. Students use diverse media and techniques to explore composition. Projects focus on line, shape, balance, texture as well as relationships between positive and negative, symmetrical and asymmetrical. Students learn color-design theory.

Course Fee

$15.00 - Fees are used to maintain department image database, purchase some student materials for special projects, and supply basic room supplies and equipment.

Course Content and Objectives

Students will experience a wide variety of creating designs/images with various media.  Emphasis will be placed on elements of design, divergent thinking, composition and skill building.  Students will learn composition, logo design, and color theory while creating images.

Teaching and Learning Methods
Discussions, demonstrations, slide presentations and gallery visits (resulting in several papers) will be included in this course along with considerable time spent in class working on design projects.  Time spent working in the studio during class and homework assignments are critical to the learning objectives.

Attendance Policy

All students must attend class regularly.  Studio classes such as this require in-class participation. Students must arrive on time.  Classes typically begin with a demonstration at the beginning of class.  Tardiness is disruptive, wastes valuable class time and will damage your grade.  Attendance will be recorded, and more than 3 absences will reduce your grade.  Attendance includes making good use of class time, and working to the end of the period.  Please contact me before class if there is a real problem with attending a class.  This is not an on-line course so please do not expect a detailed email response to inquiries regarding missed assignments.   It is expected that you will be in class to watch any demonstration that is given and participate in discussions.  Please leave your cell phones OFF during class.

Supplies:

White drawing pad 14X17

Small Sketch book @ 7X10 (@75 sheets
Black ink pens-many, I like Pilot G-2 07pens or UniBall Grip 0.7 (COSTCO)
Black Sharpee markers, or other type magic marker (fine and regular)
Ruler 18” 
Erasers (kneaded, white soap)
India ink (Higgins/Design)
Pencils a variety of leads/pencil sharpener
Scissors and/or X-actco knife #11 plus extra blades
Glue stick
set of  24(or more)   Prismacolor pencils (or a similar waxy based colored pencil)

Additional materials may be added to the list later in the semester.

Late work:  Late work should be prearranged. Any late work must be turned in within two weeks of the project due date. Late work is not eligible to be redone for a higher grade (see grading section).

Missed Class/make up work: I allow TWO homework assignments to be made up and TWO in-class projects to be made up due to missing class.

Participation:   All students are required to come to class prepared with materials/tools, and participate in discussions and critiques. This class will often require several hours of outside class time.  Students will visit at least two museums or galleries and write two one page papers describing each visit.  I will discuss this project in greater detail later.
