Attendance Policy
Attendance is required. Period. There is no practical way to recapture material covered in class. If you don’t attend you simply are not getting the information you need to earn the credits. Each student is allowed three absences. I won’t ask questions. Use them for whatever reason; however, the fourth absence will begin to lower your final grade. Each additional absence beyond the allotted three will reduce the final grade by one half a letter. For example, an “A” student who misses four class periods will receive an “A-”. It’s pretty simple, come to class.
Evaluation Methods and Grading Scale
OUT OF CLASS ASSIGNMENTS:
In addition to work produced during class time, out of class assignments will be given. You will be responsible for completing these assignments on your own time. I will provide handouts describing the specifics of each project. Be prepared to discuss your pieces with the class. Late work will lower your grade. Just meet the deadlines.
CRITIQUES:
Crits are a vital part of evaluating your work. Ideally, they are a forum for the exchange of ideas, information, and opinions. We will dedicate the beginning of each class period that falls on the due date for out of class assignments to group critiques. Everyone is required to participate. This may be the most important feature of the entire class. Critique of in class work will occur arbitrarily during the semester and serve to prepare students to discuss artwork in front of the class.
MID-TERM AND FINAL PORTFOLIO REVIEW:
As this class progresses, each student will build a body of work to keep in a portfolio. At mid-term and the end of the semester I will meet with students individually to review the portfolios. I will be looking for a margin of improvement. It then becomes very important that I can compare and contrast assignments given early in the semester against the later projects. Be sure to keep everything you do in or out of class. The collective body of your work will represent your efforts and comprise a third of your final grade
GRADING:
Grading is based on out of class assignments, class participation, (work in class, attendance, active engagement in critiques), and a Mid term and final review of portfolio. All assignments must be completed to pass the course. Your final grade, therefore, will be a composite of three areas: participation, out of class assignments, and the portfolio reviews.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS:
An assignment must be presented on the assigned due date or it is considered “late.” For each day the project, exercise, or assignment is late, one full letter grade will be deducted. In other words, if the assignment is “A” quality work, a day late will drop it to a “B.” Two days late will drop “A” quality work to a “C” and I’m sure you can imagine how quickly late work will get you into trouble. Just don’t turn work in late. If I receive a project on the day it is due, but you feel dissatisfied with your grade, you may chose to rework or redo the assignment to improve your grade. Please talk to me personally before resubmitting assignments.
INCOMPLETES:
If you are very ill or suffering from personal problems that prohibit you from attending class, please withdraw by the posted deadline and reschedule the class when you are in a position to attend regularly. Incomplete will be granted only in the most extenuating circumstances. If you have a valid medical excuse ore unusual family emergency, and you’ve completed the bulk of course work for the semester, and incomplete is possible.Materials List
