Course Description
The second semester of drawing continues the two-dimensional description with form and space using the visual element of value. The final two-thirds of the semester concentrates on color. Students begin with basic color mixing and work through a series of color-theory problems dealing with relativity of color, color illusions, psychological effects, and ideas pertinent to basic color harmony. Problems are both design-oriented and representational in nature. Pre-art major class.

Course Fee

$15.00 - The fee covers a variety of consumables used by students in the facility.

Course Text and Other Readings

Course Content and Objectives

I believe it is important for art students to learn the formal, perceptual and conceptual skills needed to make clear and accurate descriptive drawings of things seen directly in life. Though drawing accurately from observation will be one of the objectives of this course of study, it is not the only one, nor necessarily will it be primary. Color theory and application will be the focus for the majority of the semester. You will learn the properties of color, color and contrast, color and illusionistic space, color and optical effects, color compliments, and color mixing.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Attendance Policy

This is a studio class; there is no text for the class, in-class activities, lectures and discussions are a crucial component to the class content and cannot be made up if missed. It is expected that you come to class arriving on time and working until the end of the class period.  Each unexcused absence beyond three absences results in a five point deduction from your final grade point average for the course.  Two tardies equal one unexcused absence.

Evaluation Methods and Grading Scale

All students are required to come to class prepared with materials/tools, and participate in discussions and critiques. This course requires six studio hours per week outside of class. Homework assignments will be due every Tuesday. Evaluation Procedures:  Final grade for this course will be determined according to the following:
Satisfactory Completion and Review of Studio and Homework Assignments
Ability to successfully integrate into an artwork the strategies identified in the assignment.
Studio and homework projects are to be presented for critique in a completed and finished state.
Quality of the technical execution.
Challenge the artwork presents to the student.
Verbal presentation of each studio project for group critique and the demonstrated ability to engage in a meaningful discussion about the artwork with the group.
