The Photography emphasis is one of the largest studio programs in the Department of Art & Art History. As a fine arts photography program, it has at its core the belief that the contemporary art student can no longer be defined by a single medium. As a photography/digital imaging major, you will develop in a setting that encourages the incorporation of traditional methods and theories with inquiries into digital technologies and new media.
One of the strengths of our program is in alternative photographic processes where students explore the merging of 19th century photographic technologies with a contemporary vision. The curriculum requires students to use the extensive library collections on campus as well as the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. This combination of traditional approaches and contemporary critical ideologies provides a stimulating and nurturing environment for the creative artist to develop her or his personal voice.
We also have a very active student photography organization that works hard to build bridges with other academic institutions and secure exhibition opportunities for its members.
