Owen Reading Room

The D. Ray Owen Reading Room is located on the third floor of the main art building. This resource supports the department in a number of ways that help make the time you spend with us a critical learning experience.

The Reading Room subscribes to many major art periodicals, providing you with easy access for reviewing the current developments in today's art world. The Reading Room houses approximately 10,000 books that focus on the history of art, individual artists, art criticism, catalogues of exhibitions, and art techniques. Having these materials in a convenient location within the department gives you the opportunity to study examples of historic and contemporary artworks and review specific studio techniques and processes. Faculty are able to have their course reading materials available for you in the Reading Room as well as at the Marriott Library, making materials easily accessible.

The facility also has a large-print portfolio collection, the Henry Maiben collection, showing reproductions of important two-dimensional art works, and providing an opportunity for close study and discussion. Other important features include a VCR and DVD players with informative art-based VCR tape collection, and a computer kiosk for researching artists, library holdings, exhibitions, and art materials on the Internet.

Adjacent to the main reading area is a lounge with skylights, plants, tables and chairs, a microwave, and refrigerator. Here students meet for lunch, group study, and a break between classes.
