Printmaking Facilities The primary facility of the printmaking area is a large, well-lit studio with panoramic views of Salt Lake City and beyond. Our facility supports Lithography, Intaglio, Screen, Relief, and Monoprinting processes. In the computer lab, one floor down, students cross boundaries of old and new technologies, as digital processes become one option for contemporary printmaking. The intaglio facilities include one American French Tool press, 36 " x 60" and one Printmaker Company electric press, 42" x 60". The well-ventilated acid booths will accommodate several baths, 34" x 45", and are used for zinc, copper and steel plates. Our acid room also features a back-ventilated plate cleaning area and sink and full-body safety shower and emergency eye baths. Equipment also includes two large vent hoods in the main studio for use with solvents, a cabinet for laying rosin aquantints, ventilated spray booth and hot plate for laying grounds, etc. The Printshop is also installed with a compressed air supply for use with airbrushes, etc. The Lithographic facilities include one brand press, 46" x 24", and one Griffen press, 38" x 68". The shop has a variety of different sized litho stones and also carries aluminium plates. There is also a large stone grinding sink and portable pneumatic lift. Screenprinting equipment includes one Para-Press pneumatic parallel lift press that will accommodate screens up to 64" x 70", and three shop made vacuum presses, 40" x 48". The screen washout area is located in the acid room and will accommodate screens 66" x 54" and includes an electric high-pressure washer. The darkroom includes a Millington glass vacuum table, 80" x 70" for exposing etching and lithographic plates and screen frames. The exposing system is a metal halide unit. Plenty of flat file storage is provided for students in all print classes. There are four drying racks, two 48" x 31", and a good supply of related equipment, rollers, etc. |
