Ceramic Facilities The ceramics studios in the department are exceptional. The large, high ceiling rooms offer great workspaces to explore every possibility of ceramic art making. Well-lit, air-conditioned studios, with an abundance of natural light, have wonderful views of the snow-capped Wasatch Mountains. The throwing room has over 30 wheels, adjacent walk-in damp room and access to outside kiln area. A separate hand-building room has workspace for large pieces, storage areas, Fredrickson side opening electric kiln, extruder and slab roller. Other support areas include: A dry materials/mixing room With Bluebird and large Laguna mixers, pug mill and a great ventilation system. Glaze weighing room With balance scales, several small electric test kilns and ball mill. Glaze application area With studio glazes, large sink and walk in spray booth. Inside kiln area Houses most of our every day work kilns including an Olsen-24, Alpine-30, Denver Fire Clay updraft, Giel downdraft car kiln, homemade 30 cf. downdraft and four top loading electric kilns Kiln yard Raku car kiln, Olsen fast-fire wood kiln, catenary downdraft and new sprung arch soda kiln. Plaster room Includes working tables, scales and slip mixer. Graduate studio Over 300-sq. ft. room with glass north facing wall. Other spaces are available depending on department needs Miscellaneous If you wish to include mixed media with ceramics or want to expand your ideas into a different medium you'll find associated areas to facilitate your needs. They include a professionally equipped wood shop, welding and foundry shop, small metals area and a tool room with extensive range of hand tools. |
